In recent years changes in climate have brought increasing heavy downpours of rain and this has seeped through the flat clay roofs of old monasteries causing damage not only to the interior structure of monasteries but also artefacts inside..
The old mineral paints used are not water resistant and thus water damage has caused colour loss and defects to the thangkas. Rainwater seepage has caused damage on many old thankgas inside Tibetan monasteries
These pages show the restoration work of our experts on various scroll paintings in recent years.
You can thereby follow the individual development steps, some of which took many months.
If you are interested in having a historic thangka conserved / restored, please contact us. We need photos to see if we can help you. Unfortunately we cannot restore every old scroll painting. This is often not possible, especially in the case of major damage to the textiles. However, we can usually take on a job for colour and minor defects on the canvas.
