Parvati Parvati is a Hindu goddess. She is the wife of the Hindu deity Shiva and the mother of Ganesh and Skanda [also known as »Murugan« or »Karttikeya«].
Parvati is the daughter of Himavat, the God of the Himalayas. Her name means »daughter of the mountains« [in Sanskrit: »parvata«]. She is one of the many manifestations of the Mahadevi [the »great goddess«] of Hinduism. Like Shiva, Parvati has the dual aspect of preservation and destruction.
Mainly, however, she is the symbol of the life-giving and life-sustaining mother. Other names for her are Amba or Ambika [»Mother«], Bhagavati [»Sublime«] or Jagadamba [»Mother of the World«].
