This ancient bronze tsa-tsa mould was used to make Padmasambhava tsa-tsas. Its shape is very unusual and very different from other tsa-tsa molds. The age is difficult to determine, but the worn surface of the reverse indicates a very long period of use. In addition, the style of the depiction of Padmasambhava differs from the form commonly used today. However, neither of these factors is sufficient to determine its age with any degree of certainty. The date given [19th century] should therefore be taken with a pinch of salt.
Only a few individual Tibetan letters of the original engraved characters remain.
The purpose of the two round openings on the side is unclear. It is possible that they were used to attach the mould to the body with a cord. To produce a Tsa Tsa in the prescribed iconogrophy, the depiction of Padmasambhava is reversed. The second illustration shows the shape of the Tsa Tsa that can be produced with the stamp. It is therefore clearly not a pendant. There are no comparable examples in the surviving collections or literature.
The depiction of Padmasambhava on this stamp is relatively simple. His single-layered lotus throne at the bottom is clearly visible. Padmasambhava can be identified by the khatvanga staff in the crook of his left arm.
Padmasambhava [Tibetan: pad ma 'byung gnas པད་མ་འབྱུང་གནས་] lived during the reign of the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen [755-797] and is one of the historically recognised founders of Tibetan Buddhism. He mainly influenced the teachings of the Nyingmapa.
