Mahakala Bernagchen Repoussé Tsa Tsa Mold

Total View Detail Back Seal imprint on back

This tsa tsa mold shows Mahakala Bernagchen. The two-armed Mahakala who is the protector of the Karma Kagyu linieage.

The wrathful Mahakala is black, with a face, three round, bulbous eyes, a large gaping red mouth and white fangs. His yellow beard, eyebrows and hair blaze like flames upwards.

The right hand holds a bent chopper [Katrka] with a vajra handle. The left hand holds a filled skull bowl to the heart. He wears a fivefold skull crown. A garland of freshly cut heads hangs around his shoulders. Its large black cape [Black Cloak] is its distinctive feature.

Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.

The age is unknown. The form was presented to a German Buddhist in the early eighties in Tibet in the Samye monastery after a longer stay as a gift.
