This tsa tsa shows the Bodhisattva Vajrapani - tib: Chagna Dorje, ཕྱག་ན་རྡོ་རྗེ། . He is seated on a one-tiered lotus throne. He is wearing a tiger skin around his waist.
Because of his wrathful appearance he is often mistakenly associated with the Dharmapalas [protectors of the Buddhist teachings]. In fact, he belongs to the group of Bodhisattvas.
Vajrapani is a complex deity with many different forms. In the early Buddhist scriptures he appears as the companion of the Buddha. He can be recognized by the fact that he holds a vajra [tib.: dorje] in his right hand. He is usually seen in his wrathful form, in which he is a powerful protector and remover of obstacles.
Vajrapani is said to be the last Buddha to appear in this world; he represents the combined power of all the Buddhas. He is depicted in a line with Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri as the three heavenly bodhisattvas, as archangel-like guardian deities who embody the power [Vajrapani], compassion [Avalokiteshvara] and wisdom [Manjushri] of all the Buddhas of the past, present and future.
The vajra in his raised right hand is shown disproportionately large. Another unusual feature is the simplified depiction of a double vajra at head height in the upper right. His left hand holds the end of a noose ["pasa"] with which snakes catch demons [barely recognisable here]. The image of Vajrapani is framed by a string of pearls.
Below his lotus throne is a short Tibetan inscription. A loop-like pattern can be seen outside the pearl band. Further ornaments can be seen immediately to the right and left of his depiction.
Condition: This example is one of the earliest Tibetan Tsa Tsas, with an age of around 900 years. It is very well preserved, only the slightly protruding areas [face, upper body] are slightly worn. The same applies to the right foot resting on the lotus throne.
