Ushnisha Vimalo Dharani Tsa Tsa

10th - 11th cent.

This very old Tsa Tsa differs from all the others offered here in, that it does not contain any images of deities, lamas or bodhisattvas. Instead, it contains only a long Tibetan text.

It dates from the 10th or 11th century and is one of the oldest surviving Tsa Tsas. The first illustrated Tsas Tsa appeared in the same period.

Tibetans wanted to positively influence their karma by worshipping Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Donating a tsa tsa was part of this, and was an easy way to positively influence one's karma, and was therefore practised by large sections of the population.

In ancient Tibet, illiteracy was widespread outside the monasteries and the aristocracy. For these illiterate people, tsa tsas with only text were of no use. When illustrated tsa tsas first became available, they were mainly commissioned. This probably contributed to the fact that »text tsa tsas« were rarely produced.

Time has taken its toll. The Tibetan text is no longer completely legible. As far as can be made out, it is an Ushnisha Vimalo Dharani according to Indian tradition.

Wikipedia explanation: A dharani is a text of magical significance that contains the essence of a prayer or sacred teaching, usually in a symbolic way. Dharanis exist in both Hinduism and the various schools of Buddhism.

The Tsa Tssa is supplied in a transparent framed protective cover [see last detail photo].
