This old Tsa Tsa shows the Bodhisattva of Wisdom Manjushri seated on a double lotus throne. In his right hand he holds his »flaming double-edged sword of knowledge« cuts through obscuring layers of misconception and ignorance.
In Tibetan Buddhism, ignorance is one of the three basic evils of humanity, along with hatred and greed. All suffering on earth can be traced back to at least one of these negative qualities.
In his left hand he is holding a Tibetan book [manuscript of the "Prajnaparamitra" Sutra] at an angle. This is an unusual position, as he usually holds the book horizontally. In today's iconographic representation of Manjushri this book is on laying on a lotus flower, the stem of which he holds in his left hand. On this ancient Tsa Tsa there is a large lotus flower on his right without this book. This is a sure indication of the great age of the Tsa Tsa.
The Bodhisattva is surrounded by a completely preserved arched string of pearls.
Another sure sign of the Tsa Tsa's age is the outer rim, which is no longer intact. It consists of stylized lotus flowers. A similar rim is no longer found on Tsa Tsas from the 17th century onwards.
The condition is very good. Only the outermost margin at the lower right is not complete.
