This exceptionally beautiful tsa tsa depicts a lotos or »Padpung« stupa [Tibetan: Pad-spungs-mchod-rten པད་སྤུངས་མཆོད་རྟེན] also called »Heaped Lotoses Stupa«. Like all stupas, this one is associated with the life story of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni commemorating Buddha’s birth in Lumbini. The special feature of this stupa is the pattern on its surface, which consists of numerous small lotos petals, commemorating the Buddha's birth.
According to tradition, Buddha Shakyamuni was born in Lumbini Garden near Kapilavastu in northern India in the sixth century BC. Immediately after his birth, he took seven steps and lotos petals sprang up in his footsteps. The stylized lotos flower patterns on the surface of the stupa are a reminder of this.
The large central Padpung Stupa shown here rests on a double base of lotos petals and is flanked by two smaller stupas to the right and left. The two small stupas are connected to the large central stupa at the bottom right and left.
The inscriptions on either side of the stupa suggest a script of the »Nagari« alphabet. The Nāgari script emerged in ancient India around the 8th century. This is the alphabet used for Sanskrit texts is evidence of the great age of this tsa tsa.
