Old Tibetan Seal [7]
Sun & Moon Symbol
Sun and Moon are two of the most important polarity symbols in Vajrayana Buddhism. The sun represents the feminine aspect of wisdom and the moon the male aspect of method or compassion.
The sun and moon symbol was also used to identify where the top of the seal is. This prevents the seal from being printed upside down on the document. In historical Tibet, many people outside the monasteries and the nobility were illiterate. They could not read the writing on the seals.
The 28th letter of the Tibetan alphabet, »Sa«, is mirrored on the surface of the seal. It’s energy is feminine. It is also a word meaning »the earth, soil, land«.
The narrow upper part of the seal was used as a handle. The narrow central part below is perforated. A leather strap was pulled through the hole to attach it to the owner's clothing.
This meant that the seal was always at hand and could be used to seal documents in everyday life.
