letter

The first letter of the Tibetan alphabet, »Ka«, is mirrored on the surface of the seal. The letter KA is said to have an energy that is considered masculine.

You can also see a dot on the top edge. This is used to identify where the top of the seal is. This prevents the seal from being printed upside down on the document. In historical Tibet, many people outside the monasteries and the nobility were illiterate. They could not read the writing on the seals.

The surface of the seal is inverted; the Tibetan letter »Ka« can only be seen as a mirror image when comparing the last detail photo.

The narrow upper part of the seal was used as a handle. The narrow central part below is perforated. A leather strap was pulled through the hole to attach it to the owner's clothing.

This meant that the seal was always at hand and could be used to seal documents in everyday life.
