Large old Tibetan Hair Bead [3]

Tibetan: »te-jo«

Exceptionally large and rare piece of Tibetan jewellery, it is made of white metal [or silver?] and is decorated with a large turquoise stone in the centre.

This piece is remarkable for its exceptional size and quality, as well as its patina and obvious age. It is worked with fine metal wire, bead wire and granulation.

Hair ornaments with inlaid turquoise are not often found on the Tibetan antiques market. Examples of this size are very rare and rarely offered for sale.

This type of jewellery is still traditionally worn by Tibetan women today by threading a strand of hair through the holes in the jewellery and tying a knot at the bottom. Sometimes the jewellery is sewn onto peraks.

It resembles the shape of a conch. The conch is a symbol of knowledge in traditional Buddhism.
