This beautiful gau shows a stylized vajra / dorje [Tibetan: rdo rje རྡོ་རྗེ] on the front surrounded by other ornaments. The vajra is a Buddhist ritual object. It is the essential symbol of Vajrayana Buddhism. The term vajra gives it its name, also it is used in the Buddha's teachings.
In search of valuable contents, gaus were opened after the Chinese occupation of Tibet after 1950. As with most gaus still in existence today, the filling has been lost as a result. This gau is also empty.
Condition: The gau is undamaged but age has left its mark. Both parts have light verdigris deposits. They can certainly be easily removed but for the sake of authenticity they have been omitted.
