Elephant hook

The ankusa was originally used to drive elephants. It is therefore often referred to as the elephant spiked stick. It is still used today in Asia by the mahouts [elephant rider, trainer, or keeper].

The hook is generally used in tantric practices. As a ritual tool, the ankusa symbolises the removal of all negative traits from a person, freeing them from the cycle of rebirth and enabling them to achieve Nirvana.

A half vajra/dorje is attached to the handle.
