The ankusa was originally used to drive elephants. It is therefore often referred to as the elephant spiked stick. It is still used today in Asia by the mahouts [elephant rider, trainer, or keeper].
The hook is generally used in tantric practices. As a ritual tool, the ankusa symbolises the removal of all negative traits from a person, freeing them from the cycle of rebirth and enabling them to achieve Nirvana.
