In Vajrayāna Buddhism, Tara [Tib.: Dölma - སྒྲོལ་མ]་, also called »The Savior, »The Liberator»] is the female embodiment of compassion, wisdom, and enlightened activity. She frees beings from suffering, fears, and obstacles and guides them on the path to enlightenment.
In Buddhist tradition, Tara appears in 21 main forms, each of which embodies a specific aspect of her enlightened power - such as protection, healing, long life, prosperity, wisdom, or the removal of obstacles. The best-known forms are Green Tara, who represents swift help and active compassion, and White Tara, who symbolizes long life, healing, and peace.
All Taras are considered manifestations of the same enlightened nature. They are invoked in meditation, prayer, and ritual to purify the mind, accumulate merit, and foster the development of compassion and wisdom.
