Many are depicted with wrathful appearances - featuring flames, skulls, weapons, or fierce facial expressions. This is not meant to appear »evil«, but rather symbolizes resolute energy against ignorance and destructive forces.

Well-known Dharmapālas include, for example:

In some traditions, Dharmapālas are regarded as enlightened beings who consciously assume a fearsome form to protect beings or overcome spiritual obstacles. Others originate from local deities or demonic figures who were symbolically »converted« and made into protectors of the Dharma.

The term is also sometimes used more generally to refer to secular guardian deities of Buddhist monasteries or regions.
