Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara

A Bodhisattva is a being who strives for Buddhahood through the systematic practice of virtuous perfections, but refrains from entering full nirvana until all beings have been liberated.

One of the most famous Bodhisattvas is Avalokiteshvara - the patron saint of Tibet. The Dalai Lama is considered to be the embodiment of Avalokiteshvara.
