According to the legends about this birth of Buddha Shakyaumini Buddha's Mother Queen Maya wished to travel from Kapilavatthu when the time for the birth grew near from the King's capital, to her childhood home, Devadaha, to give birth.
With the King's blessings she left on a palanquin carried by a thousand courtiers. Before she arrives there, she reached Lumbini [25 km from Kapilavatthu away] . She comes to an ashoka tree which magically bends down for her. She grasps a limb of the tree, and the Buddha emerges from her right side. The Buddha was born.
The baby began to walk seven steps forward and at each step a lotus flower appeared on the ground. Then, at the seventh stride, he stopped and with a noble voice shouted:
"Above heaven and below heaven, I alone am the World Honoured One."
