This image shows a classic Tibetan Buddhist depiction of Guru Rinpoche [»Padmasambhava«], the »Lotus-Born«. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism and is particularly associated with the transmission and establishment of Buddhism in Tibet.
The Central Figure
Padmasambhava sits frontally and regally on a lotus. His posture is both dignified and meditative. Particularly striking is his youthful, slightly rounded face with a fine moustache - a typical iconographic characteristic of Guru Rinpoche.
He wears:
In his left hand, he holds the characteristic skull cup [»kapala«] associated with Padmasambhava. His right hand is extended outward and, in many depictions, holds or presents the vajra/dorje—the symbol of indestructible, enlightened power.
His Characteristic Staff
Beside his left shoulder stands the characteristic khatvanga staff. It is one of the most important identifying attributes of Padmasambhava.
At the top are several symbolic elements, including a trident, skulls, and other tantric attributes. The khatvanga refers, among other things, to the tantric transcendence of duality and to the union of different aspects of enlightened awareness.
The three human heads or skulls on the staff can have different symbolic meanings depending on the tradition, such as the overcoming of the three fundamental poisons or the transformation of body, speech, and mind.
The Aureole Behind Him
One of the most magnificent features is the large circular aureole behind Padmasambhava. It is not simply a halo, but a highly symbolic cosmic representation.
It contains:
This presents Guru Rinpoche as a manifestation of enlightened power. The enormous ornamental complexity is characteristic of Tibetan thangka painting: almost no area is left undecorated.
The Lotus
Padmasambhava sits on a large, multi-layered lotus whose petals are rendered in shades of pink, red, blue, and white. A single lotus red blossom rises from the pedestal. Similar to the Green Tara, Padmasambhava rests his right foot on this floral pedestal.
The lotus is particularly fitting because the name Padmasambhava literally means approximately »the One Born from the Lotus«.
According to the famous legend, he miraculously emerged from a lotus flower on Lake Dhanakosha at the time of his birth. The lotus symbolizes enlightenment emerging from the world of delusion without being stained or contaminated by it.
The Colors and the Composition
What immediately stands out in this image is its exceptionally symmetrical and intensely colorful composition.
The deep dark blue of the sky contrasts with:
At the top, you can see the two symbols for the moon [left] and the sun [right]. As the central celestial bodies, they represent the most important pair of opposites in Vajrayana Buddhism. The sun symbolizes the feminine aspect of wisdom, and the moon symbolizes the masculine aspect of method or compassion.
At the very bottom, there is a row of flowers.
This creates the impression that Padmasambhava is seated at the center of a cosmic mandala. The many radial lines behind him repeatedly draw the viewer’s gaze toward the center - to his face.
The small offerings and symbols of good luck below
At the very bottom is a row of ritual offerings and symbols of good luck, including spherical and jewel-like shapes. These can be understood as precious offerings made to the guru and to enlightened beings.
The lotus flowers themselves are not merely decorative either: in a sense, they form the pure realm upon which the guru appears.
An Interesting Particularity
At first glance, the depiction may appear to be a simple Guru Rinpoche thangka, but it contains a great many subtle iconographic details. In particular, the extremely detailed depictions of the khatvanga, the skull cup, the vajra, the crown, the lotus pedestal, and the cosmic aureole make it clear that this is not simply a portrait of a historical teacher.
Rather, Padmasambhava is depicted as a guru, a tantric master, and a manifestation of enlightened activity.
