This Thangka belongs to the Nyingma school, it shows a manifestation of »Dorje Dragpo« [Tib.: གུ་རུ་དྲག་པོ་], a wrathful meditation form of Padmasambhava. He is a protector of the Dharma and a destroyer of obstacles on the path to enlightenment.
He appears as orange brown in color. His right hand holds a Vajra / Dorje and his left hand a black scorpion [Symbol of Padmasambhava].
The skin of a tiger is drawn around his waist while the flayed skin of an elephant is draped over his shoulders. He wears a crown adorned with skulls and a garland of severed heads. In this wrathful meditational form, Guru Dragpo was an important protector deity of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism.
A small red Buddha Amitabha is depicted at the upper edge of the Thangka.
