15.2 Ektamatri

Full View Detail 1 Detail 2 Detail 3:

The peaceful white Ektamatri, the "only mother", is framed with large blossoms, seated beneath a parasol of peacock feathers. This very popular mother goddess belongs to the group of Lhamos, the goddesses who guard the Cosmos.

They protect nature and all beings. Evolving, devolving and present fortune also are entrusted to them. If people abuse the natural world they can send catastrophes, wars and diseases, and even change the world into an ocean of blood.

The peaceful Ektamatri is especially worshipped as the ruler and protector of Lhasa. Her face is at full attention. In her right hand she holds an arrow with a mirror and five coloured ribbons in the colour of the cosmos. Her left hand holds a golden bowl containing wishing jewels. She wears robes of five colours, a seven-petaled crown, and precious jewels like a queen. She is sitting in relaxed posture (ardhaparyanka) on a moon lotus throne.

To her right is Simhanada-Avalokiteshvara sitting on a lion, holding a snake tree (nagavrksa) and a lotus with book and sword. To her left she is flanked by Vasudhara holding a golden initiatory vase and an ear.

In the celestial realm above her appears Shakyamuni accompanied by Avalokiteshvara-Sadaksari on clouds, Prajnaparamita, and Green and White Tara. The flying Maitridakini (left) and Sarvabuddhadakini are visible within rainbow circles.

In the foreground a row of protectors are depicted. They are (starting from the left): the yellow god of wealth Jambhala, Sadbhuja Mahakala, Sita Mahakala and Kalajambhala. In front a fierceful Lhamo rides over a lake of blood.
