This thangka is scalled Hasshuron Dainichi Nyorai in Japanese [the original was made in the thirteenth century] and designated as an important national asset. It is an emanation of Kukai, founder of Japanese Shingon Tantric Buddhism, into Vairocana.

Here is a legend that when Kukai debated religious theory with monks from eight different Tendai sects, he said that anyone can reach Nirvana and become Vairocana while being alive and proved it by emanating himself into Vairocana. Hasshuron means the religious theories of the eight Tendai sects. Dainichi Nyorai is Vairocana Buddha.
