Guhyasamaja [Tibetan: གསང་བ་འདུས་པ »gsang ba 'dus pa«] is a deity in the highest class of Tantra in which the meditator ritually transforms into the deity and then works for the benefit of living beings. This Tantra is one of the most important scriptures of Tantric Buddhism. In its fullest form, it consists of seventeen chapters.
He holds a »chakra« or wheel, »padma« or lotos and a »vajra« or sceptre in his hands. On his left side, from top to bottom, he holds a »kadgha« or sword, »triratna« or three jewels and a ghanta or bell. His two main hands, crossed near the centre of his body, hold vajra and ghanta. Each attribute represents and symbolises a particular family of Buddhas.
He appears with or without a female partner [»prajna»], the female deity usually holding the symbols of the male deity in mirror image form. Guhyasamja has three faces [white, blue and red] and is six-armed in his basic form. He appears in a mixed peaceful and wrathful form in individual depictions, but also [as here] in union with his female consort Mamaki with three faces and six arms.
