This painting shows a wrathful "Dharma Protector". The wrathfulness is intended to depict their willingness to defend and guard Buddhist followers and the Buddhist doctrine from dangers and enemies.
The exact determination of the protector is difficult. Presumably, it is a frightening deity from a Nyingmapa terma tradition. The phurbu evokes associations with Vajrakila [Dorje Phurpa]. The deity is dressed in a gilded chain mail armor.
