Full View Detail 1 Detail 2 Detail 3

Amitayus [Tib.: »Ce-dpag-med« - »ཚེ་དཔག་མེད«], Buddha of Boundless Life, is closely associated with the Tathagata [also called »Dhyani«] Buddha Amitabha. As heads of the Padma Buddha family, they are spiritual sources from which emanate the compassionate Buddhisattva Avalokiteshvara and Tara.

He sits in the diamond posture, with both hands flat in the contemplation gesture [dhyâna mudra], holding a vase of elixir of immortaly with a stylized »tree of life« on top of it.

Amitayus resides in »Sukhavati«, the Western Paradise, where those who invoke the blessings of Amitabha can be reborn. Rebirth in »Sukhavati«, where conditions are perfect for attaining enlightment, is earned through merit and faith.

In contrast to the uncrowned Amitabha he wears the fivefold Buddha crown. Both are helding the contemplation gesture. His light red colour sets him apart from Amitabha, whose red colour is darker.
