A special type of Thangka is te so-called "Bardo" or between state depiction, decribed in detail in the famous "Tibetan Book of the Dead". Bardo paintings like this shows the various forms of the deities who manifests themselves to the subtle consciousness of the person during the between state after death and before birth.

This book, well known in Tibet, can be a helpful guide to nder stand and train the mind, tp prepare for the after death process, and to aid in obtaining a good rebirth.

On this Bardo Thangka the Buddha Vajrasattva is depicted holding a Mandala in his hands which shows 34 peaceful Bardo goddesses. This Mandala is hold like a mirror in front of the decased person.

A second Mandala on top shows 58 wrathful Bardo goddesses.
