This mandala belongs to the category of gold backgrounded paintings [Tib.: "Gser Than"].
It shows Buddha Shakyamuni in center attended by the two monks Shariputra und Maudgalyayan who are famous for their intellectual and mystical powers.
The first circle of the mandala contains the sixteen Arhats, the enlightened monks who remain in this world to continue to teach the Buddha´s doctrine until the arrival of the next Buddha:
01 - Angaja
02 - Kanakabharadvaja
03 - Vanavasin
04 - Kalika
05 - Vajriputra
06 - Bhadra
07 - Gopaka
08 - Gopaka
08 - Chudapanthaka
12 - Pindolabharadvaja

The style tends to be rich in smallest details, exquisitely refined patterning [usually in polished gold]. The threadlike gold lines in extremely delicate patterns of the highest refinement are an especially notable feature of this painting and creates an exceedingly elegant and linear style.
