4.25 Peaceful Vajrapani

Full View Detail 1 Thangka with brocade

Many people thought that [due to his terrific image] Vajrapani belongs to the groups of Dharmapalas [protectors of the Buddhist doctrine]. Actual Vajrapani belongs to the category of Bodhisattvas.

This painting depicts him in a peaceful manifestation holding a vajra in his right hand sitting under a tree.

Influence from Chinese painting is quite evedent. These paintings with Tibetan Buddhist subject matter were executed by Chinese painters, and one can find a peculiar painting style combining both Chinese and Tibetan characteristics.

The original antique painting may have been made after the 18th century, but it shows how Tibetan Buddhism flourished under the Qing dynasty in China.
