This Thangka shows the fourarmed Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara Shadakshari holding rosary, lotus and the wishfulling gem.
The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is the patron saint of Tibet, the embodiment of kindness and compassion, and is likely the best-known Bodhisattva. He is regarded as the spiritual son of the Dhyâni Buddha Amitâbha.
The literal meaning of »Avalokiteshvara« is interpreted in various ways: on the one hand as »The Lord Who Looks Down«, with the last part of the word, »Ishvara«, “Lord,” and on the other hand as »He who perceives [hears] the sounds [cries] of the world« or also as »The sound that enlightens the world«, whereby »Svara«, »sound«, is regarded as the final component of the word. His Tibetan name literally means »Looking with clear eyes«.
