Large parts of Nepal were affected by the earthquake on April 25, 2015. Also the village Rikankhu in the north near the Tibetan border was not spared. The Chhyoiphel Kundeling Monastery was hit hard, it almost completely collapsed. Numerous wall paintings were irretrievably destroyed.

With the help of an Indian cultural foundation the reconstruction was tackled in 2017.

The Dharmapala Thangka Centre supported this project free of charge with drafts for a complete redesign of all mural paintings. The execution was also supervised through chief artist Karsang Lama. After a construction and restoration period of only two years, the rebuilt monastery was reopened on 19th April 2019 with a big ceremony.
